Step 2: Formulating an Emergency Plan
Step 2 for preparing for a flooding emergency involves formulating an emergency plan and an emergency kit in advance. Ensure pets are safe by including them in your emergency plan. It is not only important to create this, but it is also imperative to make sure everyone is aware of the plan and how it will be conducted. This brings us to an important part of your emergency plan, which is to include an emergency communication plan with your family and loved ones.
In case family members are separated from one another during floods or flashfloods (a real possibility during the day when adults are at work and children are at school), have a plan for getting back together. Ask an out-of-state relative or friend to serve as the “family contact.” After a disaster, it’s often easier to call long distance.Make sure everyone in the family knows the name, address, and phone number of the designated contact person (FEMA, 2017).
Also included in your emergency plan is an evacuation route/plan. This plan should include information on the safest routes to shelters. Individuals living in flash flood areas should have several alternative routes. Use local alerts, radio stations, and other local information sources to get information and advice as soon as available.
